Recycling & Yard Waste Pickups

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  CHANGES FOR 2009

The Town of Bellefonte contracts with the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) for recycling and yard waste pickup.  For the last three years we have had an extremely favorable arrangement.  However, due to current economic conditions, including the cost of fuel and other factors, the following changes in our contract have been made:

1.  RECYCLING PICKUPS WILL NOW OCCUR EVERY OTHER WEEK:

• They will continue to be on Tuesdays, every other week beginning January 13.

• Remember to flatten cardboard and plastic bottles.  Households producing large volumes of recycling will be given an additional recycling cart upon request.

2.  YARD WASTE PICKUP WILL CHANGE AS FOLLOWS:

• We will be switching to the “PAY AS YOU THROW” method — each bag or bundle must bear a DSWA sticker, which can be purchased for $1 each by calling the Citizens’ Response Line at 1-800-404-7080, or at the website, www.dswa.com.  Stickers are sold in increments of 10.  You may put out an unlimited number of yard waste bags.

• You may use any trash or leaf bags of suitable size and strength (no larger than 39 gallons; no thinner than 1 mil), including any tan DSWA bags you have left.  However, the tan bags will no longer be provided after they run out.

·         Yard waste pickup will occur weekly on Tuesdays during the months April through December, and EVERY OTHER WEEK during the months of January, February and March.

·         Sticks and small branches must be bundled rather than put into bags. Bundles must not exceed 4 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet high. Branches/limbs must not exceed 4″ in diameter.  Bundles should be tied together with rope or twine, and the sticker placed around the rope or twine. Bundles without stickers will not be picked up.
